Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) comprises a system of healing art, which originated in China more than 5,000 years ago and has been offered in the United States for more than 150 years. TCM is a comprehensive system for the assessment and treatment of acute and chronic disorders, as well as preventative health care and maintenance.

The practice of TCM is based on a paradigm of the body unlike that used in Western modern medicine. This model emphasized on the concept of "Qi" (pronounced "chi"), loosely translated as "energy" or life essence, and its effect on physiological function and health. TCM's basis is supported by the scientific understanding that human beings are complex bioelectric systems. An Acupuncturist in TCM function is to promote the body's ability to heal itself. As a system of medicine it uses natural laws and energetic principles with the application of needles, energy, and pressure or stimulation to specific points on the body. Each point provides specific functions in the body in regulating the free flow of vital energy and/or signals for health and well-being.
